Five Reasons Why Made in Britain Matters

$

ndc-production
Everywhere you shop it’s easy to spot made in China, Taiwan or Malaysia labels, but it’s more difficult to take on the challenge to find fashion clothing & lingerie made entirely here in the UK. Even when you select huge designer labels, many of these are still imported, for example I tried on several beautiful Ian Stuart wedding dresses all made in China, Ted Baker’s quintessentially English brand is also made in China. Victoria Beckham dresses however are proudly made in England and if you look around there are others too.

So this is a challenge we took on, and felt compelled to support British designers and British seamstresses before we lose those skills in this country forever. And so we launched our Made in Britain section for ethical shoppers who like to support great British Industries. But what if you’ve never really thought about it before, What are the great reasons for buying home grown, home made and home designed wardrobe essentials? Does it matter? Should it matter in a Globalised world? We would argue there are FIVE main reasons to choose made in England, as many of our designers do, hopefully you will do too after reading them.

making

1. Quality & Attention to detail
There is a lot to be said for the skills we have here in the UK and the pride we take in our work, our manufacturing plants are renown for rigorous quality checks and high standards.
During our many discussions with Luisa Sidoli, Designer of Tatu Couture, she talked about the importance of checking samples, the ability to visit the factory regularly and answer questions. At these times Luisa could adapt pattens, cuts and techniques, last minute or part way through the process, achieving perfection as the end result. Luisa would explain how this would simply be impossible to achieve half way around the world.

2. Sustainability
It’s common place select fruit and vegetables, fully conscious of the source and air miles used before landing in our baskets. But how often do we consider the air miles of our clothes? As environmental factors surrounding our use of energy continues to be a source of concern, unnecessarily sending a pair of knickers to cover thousands of miles before wearing them, seams a tad wasteful if not irresponsible when we consider the damage this does and the existence of factories here in the UK.

In fact a garment made in Taiwan will travel 6,0000 miles or 9,800 km to arrive in the UK, notwithstanding shipments to warehouse, distribution centres, before eventually being stocked in a store for you.

3. Supporting Skilled Local Industries
The UK houses the largest fashion capital in the world, iconic and unique. This was achieved through the utilising local skills, through outsourcing, cost cutting and a drive for high profit margins and a squeeze ion the retail price, we stop using those skills. Over time as generations change, vocational skills no longer required are no longer taught and the UK is at risk of loosing these skills altogether.

4. Ethical Trade
In visiting a factory regularly in person, you get a feel for how the workers and work processes are managed, you see the clean, safe and healthy environments our garments are made. Whilst experiencing the pleasure this work brings to such talented hands, paid fairly for their labours and protected as humans with rights.

5. Inflation
Having the Great British Pound is often a huge advantage for our country, but as we’ve seen over the last 5 years, exchange rates have the ability to fall against our favour with every financial forecasters hiccup. We’ve witnessed a 2:1 US dollar to GBP fall to 1.4, a 1.5 exchange rate against the Euro fall to almost £1 for 1€. Each time this happens the price of products we import fluctuates. But making them in the UK means the price is agreed in economic terms to suit both businesses in a common currency, allowing retailers to set a retail price for the end consumer, irrespective of any exchange fluctuations.

There are many great British designer lingerie made here in the UK – Check out out previous post for a short list here.

Bonne Vacances – Favourite Places, Books & Lingerie of the Week

audrey

Well I hope everyone had a lovely summer as another year turns to autumn and the wind changes direction as Vianne Rocher (Joanna Harris) would say. This summer a few of us headed over to France, for what was intended to be a restful vacation although it didn’t turn out like that (some of you may have seen my previous post). So mes amis I wanted to share some holiday snaps and a little bit of l’hexagon in all it’s glory of the sun.

Brighton

Taking the Ferry from Newhaven to Dieppe has its advantages, such as the fun day in Brighton just hours before departure. An ice cream at the beach, a stroll along with old lanes and a picnic on the grass behind the beach huts.

brightonbrighton2brighton3

Châteaux de la Cazine,

A little discovery I made on a slight detour route back from the tabac, it’s amazing what you discover when following those little signs in the hedgerows. Châteaux de la Cazine, in the Creuse region this is a recently renovated châteaux overlooking a small lake set in acres of forest land complete with idyllic driveway lined with trees framing the approach to the châteaux.

chateaux

They specialise in French fine dining, in such a grand setting it still feels like homely France but the place is also absolutely stunning.

Les Lacs du Haute Charentes,

Les Lacs du Haute Charentes, Charentes region is famous for it’s lakes, I describe it as the Lake District in France, but with flatter terrain and a little more sun. It’s not entirely accurate as the lakes can be used as beaches, soft sand, beaming sun and the cool relief from a swim in the lake. With beach house Cafés and your own spot on the sand you can stay all day.

With the sweet scent of sorbet and a warm breeze that blows over the lake, gently stroking your skin, this is a place to visit for ME Time.

Book of the Holiday

As if you couldn’t guess this one, I was practically inseparable from the literary genius that is Joanne Harris, reading her most recent novel, ‘Peaches for Monsieur Le Curé’. As quoted by the independent, this is certainly an indulgence for all the senses, as Joanne talks of scents, sounds, textures and tastes to transform you to Lansquenet South Bordeaux – an appropriate choice given the location.

Magazine of the week

I picked up the French edition of Vanity Fair which appealed mostly as this was a Audrey Hepburn Special. Nothing says chic quite like Audrey Hepburn. This month’s Vanity Fair featured Audrey’s life in Rome, so much timeless beauty, wrapped in classic fashion we adore.

Favourite Lingerie of the Week

Well I love to show off my Marlies Dekkers bra with strappy tops and had intended to be alternating between my Marlies Dekkers Triangle Bra, Marlies Space Odyssey Padded Plunge Bra and my Marlies Dekkers Dame de Paris Bra, yet the one I washed and wore most often was the Nichole de Carle Opal Padded Plunge Bra and String Thong.

One simple reason, the silk was comfortable and cool (free from feathered edging or itchy lace in the hot weather), the clean lines, snug but stretchy fit made it perfect for the brazen heat – and yes I did show it off. The great thing about Nichole de Carle is that her bras give great discreet coverage just as any bikini or strappy outerwear, plus the lilac with black piping looks gorgeous against a lightly sun-kissed glow on the skin.

But as always I would love to hear about your vacation, hidden paradise you may have discovered, favourite bikini of the holiday or even ice cream.

An Exclusive Interview with Nichole de Carle

Nichole de Carle - Body

Nichole de Carle – Body

nicholedecarle20109 Nichole de Carle London Playsuit 04

As one of the most talented, well respected and iconic designers of British lingerie, we were not only delighted but also intrigued to have the opportunity to ask Nichole some burning questions. The creative genius behind NDC London, divulged to us what inspires her, who she designs for and just why it’s so AMAZING that her couture lingerie is made in house.

Read the full interview here and view exclusive behind the scenes photos from her workshop in London here.

Your unique, contemporary style stands out from traditional lingerie on the scene, we would love to hear how YOU would describe the Nichole de Carle London style?

The core style of the brand can be described as structured, symmetrical, contoured, exquisite, and the aim is to ensure that this signature style is featured throughout the ranges. The strength of the core design signature is more visable at the very top of the pyramid in the couture lingerie. However, with the three collections created by the brand seasonally, there is an opportunity to be creative in exploring different ways of implementing the unique style into the new designs.

Structured is a phrase we often use to describe your designs, I’m convinced my personal love of architecture and the influence this has on your designs explains why I am drawn to your label so much. Nichole tell us about where you find your inspiration?

I have always been inspired by masterpieces of architecture – the beauty of their complex, precise structure is very impressive. The Onyx collection, for example, has been inspired by the unique basket-weave structure of the Chrysler building. In a way, complex architecture is similar to the couture contour design – every half a centimeter makes a significant difference, it just has to be perfect to work. For fabrics and patterns, I look at the creations of Art, which has definitely proved to be a big influence. Travelling, which I also have a strong passion for, allows me to see all these masterpieces in person, which is most inspiring. And sometimes, just getting away to explore a new country or culture can be an inspiration in itself!

When you create these iconic masterpieces inspired by beautiful architecture, art and culture, Who do you see as the woman you design for?

Nichole de Carle London woman is confident with herself and her personal style, successful and independent. I’d like to think the woman who Nichole de Carle London designs for is also fashion-savy, and appreciates the idea of expressing her personality through unique touches like authentically crafted lingerie and other high quality fashion items.

The all important question! We absolutely love made in Britain labels – so much so we want to shout them from the roof tops. But every designer has their reasons. Your label is unique in that you make everything in house, why do you feel this is important?

An in-house production facility allows greater control over the technical development of the garments season to season, which is very important for the designer, as well as the consistency of the fit and quality. As a British brand I think it is also important to be creating London-based employment opportunities. Working together with the production team also helps to ensure that the team is passionate about the products they are making, which does have a positive impact on the quality of the finished product.

Ethical and sustainable fashion is also very important, we like to think of your lingerie, like others – as less of the ‘fast fashion’ kind and more of ‘an investment’ for longer term enjoyment. Where do you source your fabrics, how do you choose them & how do you ensure that they are ethical?

Our ethical approach to the selection of fabrics extends our ability to source fabrics locally within the UK and Europe. Local knowledge of the market has helped the brand to ensure that suitable working conditions are continued to be met by the fabric producers. Also, based on the experience, local sourcing reassures the brand of the fabric quality and allows for shorter delivery times.

Having owned my own Nichole de Carle London lingerie, I can personally say that it is the most flawless and beautiful underwear in existence. For those who’ve not yet had the pleasure, what makes Nichole de Carle London Lingerie the most exquisite of it’s kind?

The precision and level of skill that is given to making each garment, rare, specifically chosen materials and of course the design itself – a lot of thought goes into creating each piece to shape and compliment the female contour, and at the same time maintain the unique signature and attractive style of the brand.

Thank you Nichole for sharing these things with us, it has been a pleasure to learn more about your amazing label.
